Old Paths In Portrait

“Doct. 1. That God hath a kingdom, which he will administer and manage for his own glory.

I speak not of the kingdom of his power and providence, but of the dispensation of grace in Christ. The evangelical gospel state is compared to a kingdom; as Mat. iii. 2, ‘The kingdom of heaven is at hand.’ And so Christ himself. It may be called so with very good reason, for in this kingdom there is a monarch, Jesus Christ, to whom all power and authority is given. God the Father calls him ‘my king’ Ps. ii. 6, ‘I have set my king upon my holy hill.’ And this king hath his throne in the consciences of men, where thoughts are brought into captivity to him: 2 Cor. x. 5. And he hath his royal scepter, Ps. cx. 3, which is called ‘the rod of his strength.’ And he hath subjects, and they are called the saints: Rev. xv. 3, ‘king of the saints.’ And he hath his laws and constitutions; we read of ‘the law of faith,’ and ‘the law of liberty.’ And in this kingdom there are privileges, and royal immunities; there is freedom from the curse of the law, and from the power of sin, and from the destructive influence of Satan and the world. And here are punishments and rewards both for body and soul; there is hell and heaven. Now, because all these things do so fitly suit, therefore is the gospel called a kingdom. It will not be amiss to insist upon some of these.”

Softly and Tenderly Jesus Is Calling

“Softly and tenderly Jesus is calling,
calling for you and for me;
see, on the portals he's waiting and watching,
watching for you and for me.

Refrain:
Come home, come home;
you who are weary come home;
earnestly, tenderly, Jesus is calling,
calling, O sinner, come home!

Why should we tarry when Jesus is pleading,
pleading for you and for me?
Why should we linger and heed not his mercies,
mercies for you and for me? [Refrain]

Time is now fleeting, the moments are passing,
passing from you and from me;
shadows are gathering, deathbeds are coming,
coming for you and for me. [Refrain]

O for the wonderful love he has prom
ised,
promised for you and for me!
Though we have sinned, he has mercy and pardon,
pardon for you and for me. [Refrain]”

“Remember that God is perfectly fit for the government of you, and all the world. You can desire nothing reasonably in a governor, which is not in Him. He hath perfect wisdom, to know what is best: He hath perfect goodness, and therefore will be most regardful of His subjects’ good, and will put no evil into His laws. He is almighty to protect His servants, and see to the execution of His laws. He is most just, and therefore can do no wrong, but all His laws and judgments are equal and impartial. He is infinitely perfect and self-sufficient, and never needed a lie, or a deceit, or unrighteous means to rule the world; nor to oppress His subjects to attain His ends. He is our very end, and interest, and felicity; and therefore hath no interest opposite our good, which should cause Him to destroy the innocent. He is our dearest Friend and Father, and loveth us better than we love ourselves and therefore we have reason confidently to trust Him, and cheerfully and gladly obey Him, as one that ruleth us to our own felicity.”

-Richard Baxter English Puritan Minister 1615-1691

Mission Africa Update August 26, 2018

We are experiencing problems with our website hosting and the website is not viewable or editable in Uganda because of security issues; it seems the host sees it best to block access to their sites in Uganda and that this will be a permanent situation. We are safe and there is no threat towards us. For now you can see our communications online at: https://missionafricajk.blogspot.ug/. Thanks for your patience and as always we need and appreciate your prayers!
Friends: Our Updates are sent to instruct, encourage, edify and act as a help in prayer. We appreciate your receiving them, your replies, comments and prayer requests.
We will share this Update format once a month as God allows.
Teaching and Prayer for Africa:
May our Lord, who has blessed us with salvation in Christ help us to better understand “Of The Church” from the London Baptist Confession of Faith of 1689: “The purest churches under heaven are subject to mixture and error; and some have so degenerated as to become no churches of Christ, but synagogues of Satan; nevertheless Christ always hath had, and ever shall have a kingdom in this world, to the end thereof, of such as believe in Him, and make profession of His name.”
Edited from Operation World, Seventh Edition: About the Church in Pakistan: “The Church continues to grow despite many obstacles. In effect, most Christians exist as second-class citizens, coming from poor backgrounds and classes. Pray for: Revival: Poverty, illiteracy, and lack of teaching have hastened corruption, carnality, and lowering spiritual standards. Substance abuse occurs frequently enough among Christians to be a terrible testimony to Muslims. There are pockets of real devotion (perhaps 10% are reckoned to be committed, vivid believers), but the large majority of the Church is nominal or immature.” Jim plans to visit and serve in Pakistan in October as God wills; pray for God’s grace during this ministry time for the people there.

“Out of Any Circumstance

"As for me, I will call upon God; and the LORD shall save me"   (Psalm 55:16).

Yes, I must and will pray. What else can I do! What better can I do? Betrayed, forsaken, grieved, baffled, O my LORD, I will call upon Thee. My Ziklag is in ashes, and men speak of stoning me; but I encourage my heart in the LORD, who will bear me through this trial as He has borne me through so many others. Jehovah shall save me; I am sure He will, and I declare my faith. The LORD and no one else shall save me. I desire no other helper and would not trust in an arm of flesh even if I could. I will cry to Him evening, and morning, and noon, and I will cry to no one else, for He is all sufficient. How He will save me I cannot guess; but He will do it, I know. He will do it in the best and surest way, and He will do it in the largest, truest, and fullest sense. Out of this trouble and all future troubles the great I AM will bring me as surely as He lives; and when death comes and all the mysteries of eternity follow thereon, still will this be true: "the LORD shall save me." This shall be my song all through this autumn day. Is it not as a ripe apple from the tree of life? I will feed upon it. How sweet it is to my taste!”

-C.H. Spurgeon  British Minister  1834-1892
